Pak Chung Sham
New Associate Editor in Statistical Genetics and Genomics 

Pak Chung Sham has been Chair Professor of Psychiatric Genomics at The University of Hong Kong since 2006. He studied Medicine at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and subsequently Applied Statistics and Operational Research (part-time) at Bickbeck College London. He trained in Psychiatry at the Northwick Park, Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospitals in London, before joining the Institute of Psychiatry London as a Clinical Lecturer. He trained in Genetic Epidemiology, supported by a Wellcome Training Fellowship, and was Visiting Scholar at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1992-3. In 2000, He was appointed Professor of Psychiatric and Statistical Genetics at the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Research Centre at King’s College London. He was the Head of Department of Psychiatry, The University of Hong Kong from 2007 to 2011, and served as the Director of the Centre for Genomic Sciences from 2011 to 2019, and as Co-Director of the State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Sciences from 2014 to 2024. Professor Sham has developed statistical methods for the analysis of genetic data, including methods for heritability analysis, linkage analysis, association analysis, polygenic scores, and Mendelian randomization. He has also applied such methods extensively to study the etiology of psychiatric disorders and other complex diseases.
