Despite the predictability of genetic theory that diploid Helianthus interspecific crosses are expected to produce only diploid progenies, a significant proportion of triploid progeny were observed. Liu et al., pp 1097–1108, discovered that sunflower significantly increases triploid progeny production through reduced incompatibility that consequently increases preferential fertilization of pollen containing slightly increased unreduced male gametes.
