Abigail (Abbe) Leavitt LaBella

Abigail (Abbe) Leavitt LaBella is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her lab is housed at the North Carolina Research Center—a campus that facilitates collaboration between eight North Carolina universities, companies, and entrepreneurs. Throughout her training at American University, Duke, and Vanderbilt, Abbe has researched organisms from deep-sea clams to humans. Her current research focuses on harnessing genomic patterns to extract new and exciting biological information with a focus on fungi. She received an NIH MIRA award (2024–2029) to study how codon usage and tRNAs interact to actively regulate gene expression.
