Genetics Society of America announces Lauren McIntyre as new Editor in Chief of G3

The Genetics Society of America is pleased to announce that Lauren McIntyre of the University of Florida will become the next Editor in Chief of G3: Genes|Genomes|Genetics beginning in January 2023.

Brenda Andrews of the University of Toronto has served as founding Editor in Chief of GSA’s open access journal G3 since its inception in 2010 and subsequent launch in 2011. She has been instrumental in bringing the vision of G3 to life, guiding its growth and success in becoming a go-to home for high-quality research that contributes to the genetics community. Her ideas and influence will continue to push the journal forward, and GSA remains grateful for her leadership.

“I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the GSA community as Editor in Chief of G3 over the past eleven years,” says Andrews. “I believe the journal met and addressed an unmet need in the community and am confident that Dr. McIntyre, who has enthusiastically served both GSA journals in several capacities in the past, brings an exciting vision to the team.”

Dr. Andrews deftly brought GSA’s vision to life, recognizing the importance of providing a peer-reviewed outlet for publishing high-quality findings and experimental resources in genetics and genomics.”

The GSA Publications Committee performed an extensive search and interview process, and the GSA Board of Directors and G3 editorial staff were pleased with their recommendation of McIntyre as Editor in Chief. She will assume the role on January 1, 2023 and will work closely with journals staff and GENETICS Editor in Chief Howard Lipshitz.

“I’m looking forward to working with authors to communicate their science,” says McIntyre. “Brenda Andrews has been a tremendous leader, and the result is that G3 occupies a unique space in publishing. I’m enthusiastic about the ongoing collaboration between G3 and GENETICS; the partnership lets us offer authors a venue for publishing collaborations and highlight diverse approaches to important questions facing our field.”

About Lauren McIntyre

Lauren M. McIntyre is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Florida College of Medicine. She earned a BA in Biomathematics from Rutgers University, a Masters in Statistics, and a PhD in Genetics and Statistics from North Carolina State University. She began her career as a Research Assistant Professor in Biometry at Duke University School of Medicine before moving to Purdue University as an Assistant and then Associate Professor. She joined the University of Florida in 2006 in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and is a member of the University of Florida Genetics Institute and the Cancer Center.

Dr. McIntyre seeks to answer fundamental questions about how genetic variation influences variation in phenotype. She uses genetics to integrate genomic, proteomic, and other “omic” data to understand complex phenotypes. Dr. McIntyre is interested in innovative methodological approaches to new technology and uses experimental design to understand the impact of allelic variation in experimental and natural populations. She is excited about how new technology is blurring the lines between model and non-model systems, resulting in the myriad of opportunities available in the modern era.

Dr. McIntyre is dedicated to scientific societies and their journals. She served on the GSA Board of Directors; she also previously served as an Associate and Senior Editor at GENETICS, as well as Series Editor at the GSA Journals. She is a longstanding member of the International Biometric Society and the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution, where she has served as both Associate and Senior Editor at Molecular Biology and Evolution. 

Dr. McIntyre is enthusiastic about helping scientists communicate their work and has an insatiable curiosity about genetics. She is an avid runner and enthusiastic baker.
